Indispensable travel cup lids

Updated: Mar 19, 2022

For our very first gear review, we wanted to tell you about something small but game-changing: stand-alone sippy cup lids. They are 100% silicone and can fit in something as small as your purse or coat pocket. Like many families, we have tried all the sippy cups, looking for that balance of flow and leak-proofing. These are, hands-down, the winners in both categories AND they can come with us on any adventure.

A big thank you to my friend Clara (@onebarefamily) for the recommendation.

We bought two different brands - Boon SNUG Lids (both the sippy & straw varieties) and Healthy Sprouts. I think they are equally up to the task. The Healthy Sprouts come in a pack of five versus three in the Boon pack. We're partial to the sippy lid over the straw lid, but I think that's mostly because of our kids' ages. Isaac is just starting to be able to handle a straw without turning it into an instrument of bubbles and mess.

We use them with a few plastic cups that we already have, but we also invested in these metal cups in the 8oz and 12oz sizes (both shown in the photos below) because the harder the cup, the better the lids work (but obviously glass would be sketchy). And that brings up the only drawback of these cups - they do not work with disposable cups (the flimsy plastic kind). Lots of restaurants and airplanes use this type of cup, so be aware. So while we bring the lids on far-away adventures, we need something else for the airplane itself.

BONUS: Our daughter transitioned away from bottles when she turned one. Isaac had a hard time with this transition, so with Autumn we started experimenting with water in different cups when she was 6 months old. These sippy cup lids are definitely her favorite. They give her just enough milk or water that she doesn't dribble whatever liquid she just drank out of her mouth and onto her clothes. If she tips the cup while pressing on the mouthpiece in just the right way it can leak, but that is not common and as long as we have eyes on her, it's fine.

NOTE: For car rides, we use the Re-Play spill-proof cups. No matter what she does, Autumn cannot make a mess with these. The base of these cups also works brilliantly with the sippy cup lids described in this post.
